Oakland County, Michigan, Farmington Hills, Novi and more cities under boil-water alert

A boil water advisory was issued about 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, for the following Oakland County communities:

Commerce TownshipFarmington HillsNovi (the area bounded by 14 Mile on the north, 8 mile on the south, Napier on the west and Haggerty on the east)Oakland Township (specifically the subdivisions: The Hills of Oakland and Kings Pointe)Rochester Hills (north of Hamlin and west of Livernois)Walled LakeWest Bloomfield TownshipWixom

Health officials say the advisory is a precaution after a water main running along 14 Mile Road between Farmington and Drake burst and lost pressure, which creates conditions for possible contamination.

"Whenever a water system loses pressure for any significant length of time, precautionary measures are recommended since a loss of pressure can lead to bacterial contamination in the water system," Oakland health officials said. "Bacteria are generally not harmful and are common throughout our environment.

"Boiling water before using it will kill bacteria and other organisms that may be in the water."

The county recommends boiling water for at least one minute before making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food.

The boil water advisory will be lifted once proper sample tests showing the water is clear of contaminates are conducted.

Oakland County, Michigan, Farmington Hills, Novi and more cities under boil-water alert

The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) issued the mandatory boil water advisory at about 9 p.m. Monday for residents in Commerce Township, Farmington Hills, parts of Novi, Oakland Township, parts of Rochester Hills, Walled Lake, West Bloomfield and Wixom.

"Residents should not drink the water without boiling it first," the advisory states. "Residents must bring all water to a boil for a least one minute and then let it cool before using. Boiled, bottled or disinfected water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food until further notice."

Residents should prepare themselves for an extended period as crews were still on the scene at 9:40 p.m. Monday trying to fix the water main break.

"We’re still currently investigating the cause and determining the timeline for repair," GLWA spokesperson Amanda Abukhader said. "It's a 96-inch main, which is a pretty large piece of infrastructure."

Earlier in the day, at about 5:45 p.m. Monday, Farmington Hills officials warned motorists to avoid 14 Mile Road between Drake and Farmington roads due to a reported water main break. According to the GLWA, that break caused a prolonged loss of water pressure in the water distribution system.

"Whenever a water system loses pressure for any significant length of time, precautionary measures are recommended since a loss of pressure can lead to bacterial contamination in the water system." the advisory states.

Farmington Hills Mayor Ken Massey said Monday the water main repair could take up to three days to complete, while 14 Mile in the affected area could be shut down for a two-week period. But he cautions that timeline is an estimate.

"Unfortunately, this water main break will affect the northern part of Farmington Hills in particular," the mayor said. "We understand that it is an inconvenience but appreciate your patience and understanding while we get the main repaired."

Bloomfield Township residents are also being advised to boil because of the water main break. Township officials sent out an email blast indicating about 75 percent of the township is without water or has low water pressure due to a water main break and unspecified electrical problems.

"Repairs are underway, but no time has been set yet for a full return to service. In the meantime, it is recommended to boil water," the e-mail blast states.
