Where to Get The Flu Jab and if you Should Get it

Every winter, the risk of catching a cold or the flu increases as we all stay indoors to keep warm.

Concerns have also arisen with an outbreak in Australia which has seen cases of influenza double on last year.

Last month, it was reported there had been 170,00 cases of the flu, double that of 2016, and more than 70 deaths related to the illness, which affected those over the age of 80 and children aged 5-9 the most.

With that in mind, here is all you need to know about the flu jab this winter.

What are the symptoms of flu?

Symptoms include chills, chesty cough, tiredness, fever, joint pain or aching muscles.

Other symptoms can include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, a sore throat, a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping.

How does the flu jab work?

The annual flu vaccine stimulates the body’s immune system to make antibodies attack the virus.

According to the NHS , it can take 10-14 days for immunity to build up after having the vaccine.

It’s important to have the vaccine each year so that the body can combat different strains which scientists predict will be prevalent.

Who should get the jab?

If you're over 65 or pregnant, the jab is free of charge on the NHS.

It is also free of charge if you're:

When should you get the flu jab?

The NHS says the best time to get the flub jab is in autumn, between early October and November. If you miss this period, don’t worry you can also be vaccinated later in winter.
